Chael Sonnen: Wanderlei Silva Is My Entire Driving Factor

Chael Sonnen doesn’t want to walk away without getting his hands on Wanderlei Silva.

Sonnen and Silva can’t stand each other and there is no easier way to put it than that. They have exchanged words and almost come to blows in multiple places, multiple times. According to Sonnen nothing has changed. I am sure Scott Coker is drooling to make that fight and get these two superstars inside the Bellator cage, but he better do it fast.

“I believe that based on things I have read that Wanderlei Silva is tied up or is soon to be under contract with Bellator,” Sonnen said during the Bellator 170 conference call. “I also believe that his suspension or whatever he’s going through that was delaying him from getting a license is up in May of this year. Look the next time I see Wanderlei Silva I am going to be fighting Wanderlei Silva, and he will tell you the same thing. The goal is that that will be inside of a ring at an appropriate time, but the next time I see him I am going to be fighiting him.”

Scott Coker verified Sonnen’s thoughts during the call.

“Wanderlei Silva is currently under contract with Bellator, so we have him for a couple of years, so it is just a matter of time and hopefully we can put that title together,” Coker said.

Two years ago Sonnen was popped for using performance enhancing drugs. It wasn’t the first time he’d pissed hot and the repeat offence landed him a two year suspension. Sonnen says Silva may be the only reason he came back to the cage, but there is something he’s more interested in than Silva should the opportunity present itself.

“Title shot, I mean Wanderlei is my entire driving factor. I thought I was done with this sport and my race was ran, but I have unfinished business with Wanderlei Silva,” Sonnen said. “But, if you’re asking me about a title I will take the title shot and then I will go fight Wanderlei. You know title shots are hard to come by, Wanderlei that is a personal thing. That would be tough. Emotionally it might be Wanderlei, but I would think that through, logically and I would take the title shot.”

Sonnen doesn’t want to get ahead of himself though. He still has a very tough fight in Tito Ortiz ahead of him on the Dec 21.
