The main card for Fight Night: Evans vs Teixeira isn’t anything to write home about but it should be a decent night of fights. Here is a little preview of what is on tap.
Glover Teixeira vs. Rashad Evans
Interesting matchup in the UFC’s light heavyweight division between two grizzled vets looking to maintain their relevancy in the sport.
Rashad Evans issue has always been consistency. His career has been marred with inconsistent performances, especially within his last five fights, dropping three of five by decision. In order to win this fight, the former champ needs to avoid stand up exchanges with Teixeira and go back to his bread and butter which is his wrestling. He needs to utilize short range strikes in the clinch and drag his opponent into an exhausting five round grappling exchange, that should secure the win. The most likely outcome is Teixeira catching Evans at some point in the fight and finishing him with ground and pound. Teixeira may not be as athletically gifted as Evans, but he hits like a Mack truck and has incredible takedown and wrestling defence.
Prediction – Glover Teixeira via KO in the 2nd round.
Rose Namajunas vs Tecia Torres
The new co-main event is showcase matchup in the women’s strawweight division between two women on the brink of title contention. For Tecia Torres, it’s a matter of securing an impressive victory. Regardless of the fact that she’s currently undefeated in MMA (7-0) she hasn’t won impressively (7 wins by decision) and has garnered a reputation as being a moderately boring fighter. Listen, Torres is an absolute technician with her Muay Thai in stand-up exchanges, often blitzing her opponents with combinations, which she sets up with great footwork and pacing. She never truly throws caution to the wind, she’s a point fighter, not a finisher . Her opponent Rose Namajunas is the exact opposite, often throwing flashy techniques in hopes of securing victory. Namajunas stand-up has grown leaps and bounds since her time on the Ultimate Fighter. She put on an absolute drubbing on the UFC’s former ‘it’ girl Paige Van Zant. However, her style of fighting is rooted through her strong Jiu Jitsu base which often leaves her in vulnerable siuations. Namajunas needs to make this a dirty fight, take advantage of her opponents tentativeness and win the majority of the grappling exchanges.
Prediciton – Rose Namajunas via decision
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Darrel Horcher
To be completely honest, I don’t know much about Darrel Horcher. Prior to joining the UFC Horcher gained the reputation as being one of the east coasts hottest prospects. After watching a few of his fights, he’s clearly talented in the stand-up department, often utilizing a strong boxing base to go with his natural knockout power. However, Horcher has never come close to competing with a grappler like Khabib. Truth be told, not many UFC fighters have dealt with someone as physically imposing as the American Kickboxing Association standout. I’ll keep this short and simple, Khabib will win.
Prediction – Khabib Nurmagomedov via 1st round submission
