Michael Chandler: Justin Gaethje Is Over-Rated

Mike Chandler thinks Justin Gaethje is the most over-rated lightweight in the world.

Rumour is World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje will become a free agent in under a month one way or another. Gaethje is an impressive 17-0 with 14 TKO’s and will likely be one of the most sought after free agents in MMA. However, not everyone is impressed with the skills of the WSOF lightweight champion. Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler was highly critical of Gaethje in a series of tweets.

Gaethje is coming off a fourth round victory by doctor stoppage over Luiz Firmino. It was the first time Firmino had ever been stopped by TKO in his career. It was by no means a dominant victory for Gaethje though. To the surprise of many Gaethje was having a great deal of trouble putting away the Brazilian and on many peoples score card was losing the fight, but he did batter the Brazilian to the point that he could not continue. Chandler is one person who isn’t impressed with Gaethje’s power or fight IQ.

Chandler was critical of Gaethje’s competition, which to many is a fair criticism. Although Gaethje has an undefeated record he doesn’t have even a top 15 name on his resume. To this point the biggest name on his resume is Melvin Guillard who prior to the Gaethje fight was 4-5 with 1 no contest in his previous10 fights. The lack of ranked opponents on Gaethje’s resume was something Chandler was quick to point out.

It is the one question most hardcore MMA fans want to see answered. How does Justin Gaethje fare against the best lightweights in the world. Chandler would like to answer that question for everyone if Scott Coker can persuade Gaethje to make the jump over to Bellator.

At this point it is just a waiting game to see what Justin Gaethje decides to do. One things is a clear and cold truth, if Justin Gaethje wants to be considered one of the best lightweights in the world he is going to have to part ways with the WSOF and start hunting bigger pray. Is Michael Chandler more than he can chew? I for one want to find out.
