Pettis Is Focused On Becoming A Two Weight World Champion

The only thing Anthony Pettis is focused on right now is becoming a two weight world champion.

When Pettis made the drop from lightweight to featherweight it was to chase history. Less than a week ago that goal was fast tracked when his fight with Max Holloway became the main event at UFC 206 and an interim featherweight title was added into the mix. Pettis told Ariel Helwani on the MMA hour, he doesn’t care how people feel about it. He’s focused on being a two weight world champion and now he is one step closer to making it a reality.

“Honestly, at this point in my career I don’t even care what people say about real belts, fake belts, belts. I am here to be a two weight world champion,” Pettis said. “This is one step closer to making that happen, so whether it’s Jose Aldo, Conor McGregor, Max Holloway I mean line em up.”

Pettis is happy to add the interim title to his collection but acknowledges the it’s by no means the title. He won’t be content until the he unifies the belt.

“The interim champ isn’t the real champ,” Pettis said. “I am not going to stop at just winning the interim belt. Obviously, I am going to make sure this belt gets unified whether its with McGregor or it’s with Aldo”

There are some critics of Pettis receiving a title shot after only  a single fight at featherweight and going 1-3 in his last four, but Pettis believes his accomplishments and being a fresh face in the division is exactly why he deserves the shot.

“I have fought the who’s who of 155 pounds, I’m a former champion. I’m what the division needs right now,” Pettis said. “Max Holloway, great competitor, good fighter, he already lost to Conor McGregor. Jose Aldo, he already lost to Conor McGregor, I go in there I am a fresh face, whether it’s McGregor, whether it’s Aldo, whether it’s Holloway, I haven’t fought any of these guys, so it’s a plus for the division.”

I can’t imagine this fight delivering anything but fireworks. It has possible fight of the year candidate written all over it. On top of that a unification bout between either of these guys and Jose Aldo will be unreal.
